This week, an official Kurt Cobain first ever solo album Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings released in both a 13-track version and a 31-track deluxe edition which is most of them was a bunch of unreleased recordings and demos from the Nirvana frontman that director Brett Morgan unearthed them during the process of making his recent documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck. Previously, we’ve already heard an early version of “Sappy,” the Beatles cover “And I Love Her,” and a 90-second “Been A Son” demo, and now the album can be stream in full below via Spotify.

Kurt Cobain’s first ever solo album Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings is out next week and its featured a bunch of unreleased recordings and demos from the Nirvana frontman. We’ve already heard a few selections from the album so far, including “Sappy” and Beatles cover “And I Love Her.” Now a 90-second demo of “Been A Son” has surfaced — the track that also appeared on 1989’s Blew EP and the 1993’s Incesticide compilation. Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged Cardigan & Lock Of Hair Up For Auction

Kurt Cobain’s famous cardigan that he wore during Nirvana’s iconic MTV Unplugged concert in 1993 is part of a large selection of music memorabilia going up for auction through Julien’s Live — the home of celebrity and music memorabilia auctions. The cardigan’s a medium-sized Manhattan brand garment made of acrylic, mohair, and lycra with five-button closure (one button absent) with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket. The cardigan “was obtained from a close friend” expects to fetch between $40,000 and $60,000. A lock of Cobain’s hair is also being offered for $4,000. The hair belongs to doll maker Dame Darcy, who received it from Cobain’s widow Courtney Love when Love make a doll for their daughter Frances Bean Cobain. Other notable items in the auction are locks of hair of John Lennon, Ringo Starr’s kickdrum head from the Beatles’ Ed Sullivan Show performance, Michael Jackson’s dental mold used to create his fangs in the “Thriller” video and Steven Tyler’s insurance card. Nirvana MTV Unplugged Released 21 Years Ago After Kurt Cobain’ Death

The final months of Kurt Cobain’s life were chaotic to say the least, but in the midst of it all, the singer and his band Nirvana delivered a poignant and beloved live performance that proved to be one of their most popular releases. That would be the band’s MTV Unplugged performance, recorded in Nov. 1993, that would eventually be released on Nov. 1, 1994, in the aftermath of Cobain’s death.
At the time, Nirvana had seen their popularity reach new heights and the band had become one of the most familiar faces on the music video network thanks to videos like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “In Bloom” and “Heart-Shaped Box.” At the same time, MTV had spawned one of the most popular music showcases of the day with their MTV Unplugged series, showcasing some of the biggest acts performing their songs in an acoustic setting. Nirvana, who had released their In Utero album just two months prior to the taping, had been pursued by the network for what would definitely be considered a coup for the show. But the band wasn’t exactly keen on replicating what had been done by others before. As Dave Grohl stated, “We’d seen the other Unpluggeds and didn’t like many of them, because most bands would treat them like rock shows — play their hits like it was Madison Square Garden, except with acoustic guitars.” Instead the band looked at Mark Lanegan’s 1990 album The Winding Sheet as a source of inspiration. The disc featured a more stripped back sound and it should be noted that both Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic made guest appearances on the Lanegan disc. Unlike a lot of their peers, Nirvana didn’t view this as a “greatest hits” show, instead opting to go deeper in choosing cuts and including a number of cover songs, something that didn’t exactly sit well with the network. Among the set list, only “Come As You Are” could be considered a major hit for the band.
Speaking of covers, three of those belonged to the Meat Puppets, whom Nirvana had been touring with just prior to the taping. Cris and Curt Kirwook joined the band for performances of “Plateau,” “Oh, Me,” and “Lake of Fire,” the latter of which would receive plenty of play in the aftermath of the airing. Producer Alex Coletti told Guitar World, “[The network] wanted to hear the ‘right’ names — Eddie Vedder or Tori Amos or God knows who.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Curt Kirkwood was asked about the band’s influence on Nirvana. He stated, “We’ll never know how much influence we had on Kurt because we can’t ask him that. We can ask Krist Novoselic, I guess. Musically — by the time we heard them — we were too far gone into our own thing. I think they immediately warmed my heart because I immediately felt some sort of spiritual kinship. They were one of the only bands I’d seen since the Butthole Surfers that I really felt was in the same ballpark as us nihilistically and aesthetically and spiritually.”
Other covers included David Bowie‘s “The Man Who Sold The World,” which would serve as a single from the album release, Lead Belly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” which closed out the set, and a re-titled “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam,” which was initially done by The Vaselines. As for the Lead Belly cover, the song dated back for Cobain to the aforementioned Mark Lanegan disc The Winding Sheet. According to the New York Times, the two musicians bonded over the original song that Lead Belly recorded in 1944 and Cobain played guitar on Lanegan’s version. When it came time to do the MTV Unplugged special and feeling the spirit of the moment, the band closed out their show with their memorable rendition of the song.
The road to the taping did prove to provide many challenges. The band dedicated two days to rehearsing for the show and reportedly were not happy with Dave Grohl’s drum sound. “What I didn’t know was up until the day [of the Unplugged performance], there was talk of Dave [Grohl] not playing at all in the show,” Coletti remembered. “Kurt wasn’t happy with the way rehearsals were going; he didn’t like the way Dave sounded playing drums with sticks … He’s a heavy hitter, and the thing about Unplugged, especially with rock bands, is if the drummer doesn’t really, really get it under control and tries to play a rock show on a smaller kit, then it brings the show to a bad-sounding electric show instead of a good-sounding acoustic show.” Eventually, Coletti sent a production assistant to a local Sam Ash to get Grohl some wire brushes and sizzle sticks, which proved to do the trick.
Cobain was also nervous about the performance, fretting over everything from the sound to the look. Coletti recalls, “The set was a conversation with Kurt. He asked for stargazer lilies and when I went up to see Kurt and showed him the drawings, he said, ‘I need more flowers and candles.’ I said, ‘Like a funeral?’ He said, ‘Exactly, like a funeral.'” In Charles Cross’ bio about Cobain, one observer stated about the show that at one point the singer was refusing to play. He added, “There was no joking, no smiles, no fun coming from him … Therefore, everyone was more than a little worried about his performance.”
But the worry was for naught as Nirvana pulled together one of the more memorable live performances in music history with the show. The lineup featured the familiar Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl, bolstered with touring guitarist Pat Smear and cellist Lori Goldston. The show opened with a beautifully reserved version of “About a Girl” from the band’s Bleach album. The song was a key turning point in defining Nirvana’s sound early in their career and it’s pop-leaning influence set the tone for what was to come. When the Nirvana: MTV Unplugged in New York was released a year after the performance, “About a Girl” got the first nod as a single.
“All Apologies,” which was recorded for the In Utero album and was initially released as a double-A side with “Rape Me,” is probably better known for the MTV Unplugged version, which dominated the MTV airwaves in the aftermath of Cobain’s death. The song was nominated for Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group and Best Rock Song Grammy Awards in 1995. “The Man Who Sold The World,” “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” and “Lake of Fire” also generated plenty of attention off the disc.
Cobain would die on April 8, 1994, just five months after the recording of the MTV Unplugged special. Initially, DGC asked for something they could release to combat bootlegs flooding the market. The band intended to release a double album featuring live performances from throughout their career with the addition of the MTV Unplugged special. But after having trouble emotionally investing themselves in the project, the surviving members opted instead to just release the Unplugged performance, turning it over to producer Scott Litt to oversee the record.
On Nov. 1, 1994, the album was released, immediately debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The disc would go on to be certified 5 times platinum and has universally been considered one of the greatest live albums of all-time. Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged in New York would also win the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996 and the DVD would be released in 2007.
“I think it’s a really important performance for Nirvana fans because I think it showed another side to them that unfortunately we never got to see again,” concluded MTV Unplugged director Beth McCarthy-Miller.

Kurt Cobain officially released his first solo single twenty-one years after his death. In the process of making his recent documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, director Brett Morgen unearthed a whole bunch of Cobain’s previously unheard home recordings, and those recordings are being released next month as a Kurt Cobain solo album under the name Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings. But even before that, a 7″ containing Cobain’s cover of the Beatles’ “And I Love Her” and an early demo version of Nirvana rarity “Sappy,” alternately known as “Sad.” Listen below.

On Nov. 13, a collection of songs from Kurt Cobain’s personal tapes will be released as Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings. The album will be released on CD, cassette, and digital formats. It will be released on 2xLP, a 13-track standard edition and 31-track deluxe edition will be available. Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings contains song snippets, demos, “musical experiments,” and material that eventually ended up on Nirvana albums. It will be followed on Nov. 20 by the previously rumored “And I Love Her” b/w “Sappy” (Early Demo) 7" vinyl. Montage of Heck will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on Nov. 13. A super deluxe Blu-ray/DVD package will include the documentary, the 31-track soundtrack on CD and cassette, 48 minutes of ancillary interviews, a 160-page book of interviews and images from the Cobain archives, a movie poster, postcards, bookmark, and a puzzle.

Cameron Crowe Reveals Lost Footage of Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain Together

'Pearl Jam Twenty' is an upcoming film by the band being directed by Cameron Crowe. While digging through the video archives, he found a bit of footage that surprised and delighted him, confirming a story that had become a bit of an urban legend. He brought the proof to 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon' on NBC.
As background, Crowe said, "I think the musicians all knew each other, but Kurt and Eddie Vedder had a little bit of a back and forth thing going on in the press. They also were friends on the side."
The footage he found was from the 1992 Video Music Awards, and showed a candid and somewhat odd moment of warmth the two men shared.
"While Eric Clapton is playing 'Tears in Heaven' at the VMAs," Crowe said. "Kurt and Eddie have a moment below the stage where they slow dance."
He couldn't believe he'd found the footage, and yet was touched by the genuine warmth the two men shared, and that it was a moment they could share out of the media spotlight. While it wasn't as pervasive then as it is now, it was still difficult for stars of their status to get completely away from the spotlight.

44 Things You Didn’t Know About Kurt Cobain - Happy 44th Birthday R.I.P

Close to 17 years ago, Kurt Cobain died. Conspiracy theories about his death anchoabound — as they tend to do with people of note — but most agree it was Cobain’s own decision to end his life. Since today would have been his 44th birthday, we bring you 44 facts about the man who struggled with drug addiction, being misunderstood, and those record industry types willing to defang the music from Cobain’s Pacific Northwest for the sake of money, power, and instant, yet fleeting success.
1. Before Nirvana, Cobain had auditioned to be in the Melvins, but was rejected.
2. While still a teenager, for eight months Cobain lived at a friend’s house and slept on the sofa.
3. When Nirvana was on the rise, Metallica sent them a fax that read: “We really dig Nirvana. Nevermind is the best album of the year. Let’s get together soon, Metallica. PS, Lars hates the band.”
4. For many years, Cobain enjoyed making Super-8 films. One of these movies contains a scene in which Cobain commits suicide.
5. In his free time, Cobain liked to buy big hunks of meat from the grocery store, and then go out into the woods and shoot at them with a variety of guns.
6. For a time, Cobain would often throw up before each show.
7. In June 1976, shortly after his parents divorced, a young Cobain scribbled onto his bedroom wall, “I hate Mom, I hate Dad, Dad hates Mom, Mom hates Dad, it simply makes you want to be sad.”
8. One of Cobain’s friends, Carrie Montgomery, once said that he “made women want to nurture and protect him. He was a paradox in that way, because he also could be brutally and intensely strong, yet at the same time, he could appear fragile and delicate.”
9. Cobain came close to joining the Navy, even meeting with a recruitment officer at one point to discuss enrolling.
10. A line from one of Cobain’s journals reads: “I have met many minds able to store and translate a pregnantly large amount of information, yet they havent an ounce of talent for wisdom or the appreciation of passion.”
11. Cobain recorded his first songs in December 1982 at his Aunt Mari’s house. They involved a guitar, bass, and spoons banged against a suitcase. Cobain titled the recordings “Organized Confusion.”
12. Cobain started using heroin on a daily basis to relieve his chronic stomach pains. In his diary, he wrote, “So I decided, if I felt like a junkie, I may as well be one.”
13. At one point, Cobain claimed to spend $100 per day on heroin.
14. In one journal entry, Cobain stated that the Sex Pistols were “one million times more important than the Clash.”
15. After Nirvana was famous, Cobain offered to play at the inaugural International Pop Underground festival in Olympia, but the event coordinators turned him down. Cobain was hurt by the rejection, and felt alienated from the scene he cared about most.
16. Cobain started wearing boxer briefs after Courtney Love expressed concern over his tiger-print Y-fronts.
17. Cobain would sometimes get moody and sit in a corner for 45 minutes without saying a word.
18. Cobain once wrote, “Art that has long lasting value cannot be appreciated by majorities, only the same, small percent will value arts patience as they always have. This is good.”
19. As a child, Cobain could recite the dialog from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind word-for-word.
20. Just hours after performing on Saturday Night Live, and one week before Nevermind hit number one on the charts, Cobain overdosed on drugs. Courtney Love found him at 7:00 am the next morning lying on the floor. She revived him by splashing water on his face and punching him in the stomach.
21. On Christmas Eve, 1991, three months after the release of Nevermind, Cobain and Courtney Love were living in a tiny room in a friend’s apartment.
22. As a boy, Cobain was temporarily put on Ritalin to curb his hyperactivity.
23. When asked what it’s like being number one on Billboard, Cobain responded, “It’s like being number 16, only even more people kiss your ass.”
24. One of Cobain’s most prized possessions was a signed first edition of William S. Burroughs’ Naked Lunch.
25. In 1992, Cobain claimed that he and Courtney Love spent a million dollars: $80,000 on personal expenses, $380,000 on taxes, $300,000 on a house in Carnation, Washington, and the rest on doctors and lawyers. “That’s not very much,” said Cobain. “That’s definitely not what Axl [Rose] spends a year.”
26. After performing “Territorial Pissings” on Saturday Night Live, Cobain and Nirvana bassist, Krist Novoselic began French-kissing. SNL refused to air the footage on reruns.
27. Before he was famous, for a time Cobain worked as a swimming instructor for kids at the YMCA in Aberdeen.

36. Before launching into “Smells Like Teen Spirit” live on the British television show The Word, Cobain announced, “Courtney Love, the lead singer of the sensational pop group Hole, is the best fuck in the world.”
37. Cobain’s favorite Pixies song is “Gigantic.”
38. Courtney Love once said, “Kurt was pure and he was also insanely ambitious. He wanted what he got, but because of his training, because of Olympia, he decided he didn’t want it.”
39. When just starting out, Cobain insisted that Nirvana practice five nights a week.
40. While in junior high, Cobain’s father, Donald, enrolled Cobain in his school’s wrestling team. In tournaments, Cobain refused to fight back. Instead, he sat on the mat with his arms folded.
41. As a boy, Cobain had an imaginary friend named “Boddah.”
42. Cobain often watched television late into the night.
43. In a letter to his father, Donald, Cobain wrote: “Ive never taken sides with you or my mother because while I was growing up I had equal contempt for you both.”
44. While homeless for a time, Cobain would sleep in the waiting room at Grays Harbour Community Hospital, the place of his birth.
