Smashing Pumpkins released “Panopticon” as “Oceania” 2nd single
Unknown | September 15, 2012 - 9:54 pm
Smashing Pumpkins recent released, Oceania made its debut last June and now the second single from the album titled “Panopticon” is primed and ready for radio airwaves.
The song, quickly heralded as an Oceania favorite by many critics, took a long time to develop, according to Billy Corgan. It started with a riff, but that’s where things got tricky. “It’s similar to ‘Quasar’ in that we had the opening riff and didn’t know what to do with it,” Corgan says. “It sat for a while, but everybody felt strongly about it. It had a, dare I say, ‘modern-feeling’ to it, but still in the style of guitar that I like to play.”
So how did the writing block come to an end? Corgan explains, “Ultimately, I just sat down and wrote the song on the piano.” He continued, “Sometimes, when you’ve got a riffy song, it helps to just play the chords with no rhythm, and then you hear the ‘song’ in it. It’s those very Paul McCartney/Wings-type chords – Broadway-type chords.”
The song has definitely struck a chord with music fans, and Corgan gives his take on the sound in the interview. “It goes from a very ‘majorly’ feel into something sorrowful, almost a Spanish feel,” said Corgan. “I don’t know how the heck I did that, but it’s one of my favorite things in the song, how you can keep the key but change the emotion.”
Smashing Pumpkins will be bringing ‘Panopticon’ and the rest of Oceania to the live stage. The band has committed to playing their new album in its entirety for one set followed by a second set of deep cuts and past hits. Listen to “Panopticon” below:

Smashing Pumpkins New Album “Oceania” Now Streaming In Full On iTunes
Unknown | June 12, 2012 - 1:07 am
OCEANIA is the forthcoming album by THE SMASHING PUMPKINS. Intended to recapture the album experience, all 13 songs on OCEANIA will be premiered simultaneously to fans, radio, press and the online world. Forgoing the standard industry launch, the group purposely planned no single or video to be released prior to the full album.
Starting today, Monday, June 11, OCEANIA will be streamed for free in its entirety for one week exclusively on the iTunes Store (http://www.itunes.com/). Fans will be able to pre-order the album all week leading up to the June 19 in-store date. OCEANIA was specially mastered to optimize digital sound quality for iTunes Store customers. The release comes via the band’s own Martha’s Music/EMI Label Services/Caroline Distribution.
Listen to OCEANIA here: www.iTunes.com/SmashingPumpkins
Having his own label through EMI afforded PUMPKINS leader BILLY CORGAN the opportunity to try something different. It is a launch scenario that goes against industry standards by allowing the album to be heard as it was meant to be. The group’s release plan was in no way intended to slight radio stations, video channels, press or online outlets. Instead, it represents the artistic vision of a band who, says CORGAN, “was dead set on making an album where every song was just as valuable as any other, ignoring the typical claptrap you hear about needing a single. The only way to make the case that every song on Oceania is worth hearing is to put your heart into the sequence as a cohesive whole.”
OCEANIA was recorded at the group’s studio in Chicago with CORGAN’s bandmates: guitarist JEFF SCHROEDER, drummer MIKE BYRNE and bassist/vocalist NICOLE FIORENTINO. The powerful 13-song collection (see track listing below) was produced by Corgan and Bjorn Thorsrud and mixed by David Bottrill (Muse, Tool, King Crimson, etc). Marking THE SMASHING PUMPKINS’ 7th studio record, it is “an album within an album,” part of their 44-song work-in-progress TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE.
“I’ve been adamant in stressing that as a group, first and foremost, we are here to make new music together,” says CORGAN. “I’m proud to say that on Oceania I feel we’ve cut our own path forward. Jeff, Mike, and Nicole have all made significant contributions to the tone and texture of Oceania, which is an album that is unlike any I’ve ever made. Yet at the same time I believe it upholds the same musical values I’ve always pushed for with The Pumpkins, be they progressive, emotional, epic, or restless.”
Here’s the OCEANIA track listing:
Quasar
Panopticon
The Celestials
Violet Rays
My Love is Winter
One Diamond, One Heart
Pinwheels
Oceania
Pale Horse
The Chimera
Glissandra

Smashing Pumpkins Release “Gish” and “Siamese Dream” Remastered Versions
Unknown | December 01, 2011 - 1:23 pm
November 29 in North America and on December 5 internationally, EMI Music launched an extensive campaign honoring the legacy of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS by reissuing the iconic alternative band’s first two albums–GISH (1991) and SIAMESE DREAM (1993), certified platinum and 4X platinum respectively–in CD, deluxe 2CD/DVD, vinyl LP, and digital configurations. Both albums, each with bonus content and special features that were curated from the band’s archives by founding member Billy Corgan, have been painstakingly remastered for the first time from the original master tapes by Bob Ludwig. *See all track listings below.
With the full support and guidance from The Smashing Pumpkins –who’ve created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history, selling over 30 million albums–EMI’s global catalog reissue campaign will last through 2013; it will encompass all the band’s albums and B-sides from 1991-2000, with other release dates to be announced. The pivotal group’s many hits defined thealternativemusic era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation. Gish highlights include “I Am One,” “Siva” and “Rhinoceros,” while Siamese Dream features “Cherub Rock,” “Today” and “Disarm.” Both groundbreaking albums were produced by Butch Vig and Billy Corgan.
As THE SMASHING PUMPKINS get the fully remastered treatment via these reissues, the band is excited to be moving forward by creating new music. After touring America and Europe this fall–the trek launched October 5 in Los Angeles and wraps December 8 in Lisbon–they will release OCEANIA, “an album within an album,” as part of their in-progress 44-song work TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE. Featuring 13 new songs, OCEANIA will be released in early 2012 (further details TBA).
For the GISH and SIAMESE DREAM liner notes, Billy Corgan was interviewed by journalist/author David Wild. Corgan reflects on why these albums were hard-won triumphs for the band and discusses the origins of the songs.
In the SIAMESE DREAM liner notes, Corgan says:“We start the album out with ‘Cherub Rock’ which is basically my big F.U. to the indie world. If you read the lyrics, that was basically me railing against the hipper than thou New York indie mentality.”
Here are the special features about both reissues:
- · Deluxe versions of Gish and Siamese Dream will eachincludea bonus disc of rare and previously unreleased audio content.· Deluxe versions of Gish and Siamese Dream also contain a never-before-released live show from the Metro in Chicago on DVD. Smashing Pumpkins Debuted "Owata" Short Film on Yahoo! Music
Unknown | June 30, 2011 - 11:06 am
Smashing Pumpkins have released a new music video for the track "Owata." The track itself is the tenth song released as part of the colossal 44-track effort titled Teargarden By Kaleidyscope.
The track was discovered by fans on Yahoo! Music before the band acknowledged the video's release via their Twitter account.
The "Owata" video directed by Robby Starbuck, features wrestlers Cheerleader Melissa, Shelly Martinez and Raven and according to a prior press release, is the first-ever video to be filmed with the Red Epic M camera, which is also now being utilized by James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic) and Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings, King Kong.)
Corgan expressed the band's excitement at being on the cutting edge of technology, saying: “I have waited and waited to make the right video for the right song on Teargarden…, so I’m really excited that we are coming at this aggressively with the newest technology that’s out there. With the concept we have at hand, which is based on brutal Japanese style of women’s wrestling, we’ll need to get super clear close-ups to tell the story properly.”

The Smashing Pumpkins Debut New Song “Lightning Strikes” via RollingStone.com
Unknown | March 19, 2011 - 6:44 am
The Smashing Pumpkins released their ninth free track “Lightning Strikes” on Thursday, March 17. It will first be available for 24 hours at Rollingstone.com, Then starting Friday, March 18, it will be available for free download at www.smashingpumpkins.com; the site also offers a widget enabling fans to host the song anywhere on the web.
Pumpkins leader BILLY CORGAN says the song is “dedicated with affection to Mark Tulin...and all our great Japanese fans who are in our prayers.” Mark Tulin, the bassist and founding member of the pioneering psych-rockers The Electric Prunes, died last month. Tulin played in the Pumpkins and appears on tracks from the band’s Teargarden By Kaleidyscope work. He also toured with Corgan in the band Spirits In the Sky in 2009.
"Lightning Strikes" is now the ninth song to be offered to fans via free download. It is from the Pumpkins’ Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, an in-progress 44-song work. Since December 2009, the band has been releasing one song at a time for free, with eight of the songs also available on two physical EPs that were released in 2010.
The Smashing Pumpkins -- singer/guitarist BILLY CORGAN, guitarist JEFF SCHROEDER, drummer MIKE BYRNE and bassist NICOLE FIORENTINO--recorded “Lightning Strikes,” says CORGAN, “by all the members of the band after we came off our last tour” at the end of 2010. “I feel this song organically hints at new directions without being forced.”
“Lightning Strikes” has an interesting back story. Explains CORGAN: “It was supposed to be more of a fun thing, a song originally written for the Electric Prunes. But I found an element in it that suggested a bigger picture, and unfortunately I stole it back from them. The lyric in my mind combines the isolation of modern life with the need for a never ending romantic story.”
For CORGAN, the process of releasing music one song at a time “has inspired me to treat each song as its own thought as opposed to a collective mentality where songs need to fit together. It has definitely helped me to focus, and pay more attention to what I'm trying to say with each release.”
In 2010, the Pumpkins performed three runs of dates in the U.S. plus shows in Asia, Australia, New Zealand and South America. Asked about the band’s touring plans for 2011, CORGAN says: “We had no plans of going on the road this year, but now we may go to Europe in the fall, and if that happens, we’ll play a few select dates in America.”
