Watch Ehiopian Students Sing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” For Dave Grohl’s Birthday

Last year, an education volunteer with Peace Corps, Matt Westerberg used Pearl Jam 1991’s song “Even Flow” in helping a whole school full of Ethiopian kids learn English. Westerberg, who’s teaching English at a small town in Northern Ethiopia takes a few minutes each day to teach the lyrics to arguably the most influential song of the 90’s. Recently, Westerberg used Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is sung daily by over 150 screaming Ethiopian students. Yechila Secondary School paying homage to Nirvana and also containing a very special birthday message to the band’s legendary drummer, Dave Grohl, who celebrates his birthday on Wednesday. Watch Dave Grohl’s Tearful Eulogy At Lemmy’s Memorial Service

The memorial service ceremony for Motörhead frontman Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, who passed away last week, held at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood last night. Their drummer Mikkey Dee, Dave Grohl, Slash, Matt Sorum, Alice In Chains’ Mike Inez, Anthrax’s Scott Ian, Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, and Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, and Lars Ulrich among whose spoke. Dave Grohl tooks on the last 10-minute slot and he delivered an emotional eulogy. Grohl briefly said:

“He’s my hero. He’s the one true rock and roller that bridged my love of AC/DC, and Sabbath, and Zeppelin, with my love of GBH, the Ramones, and Black Flag. So I walked up, and said, ‘Excuse me Lemmy, I don’t want to bother you, but you’ve influenced me so much. You’re my musical hero. I’m a musician, I play in the Foo Fighters, and I was in Nirvana.’ He looked up to me from the video game, and the first think he ever said to me, he said, ‘I’m sorry about your friend Kurt.’”

Dave Grohl was appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden alongside Fast & Furious actress Jordana Brewster and The Office's Rainn Wilson when the host Corden brought out a mature life model named Jonathan so that his guests could show off their drawing skills. Grohl was the last of the trio to unveil his finished artwork, which Corden praised for adding “an Easter theme” to the model’s bare form. Grohl also spoke about his love of the band  Sepultura. Finally, Grohl closing out the episode with an impromptu jam session with Wilson and comedian/musician Reggie Watts. Watch all below.

A film documentary of the Hurricane Sandy benefit show at the Madison Square Garden for Hurricane Sandy victims, 12-12-12 will be released on November 15th in Los Angeles and New York. The documentary highlights the concert that took place last December in New York at Madison Square Garden featured performances by Paul McCartney with Nirvana surviving members, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roger Waters, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder and other artists. Hear Dave Grohl & Krist Novoselic Talk Nirvana’s In Utero Memories

Nirvana’s two surviving members, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, recall their time recording what would be the band’s last studio album, In Utero. This week marks the 20 year anniversary of the album. NPR’s All Songs Considered has done a lengthy interview with both of them about the recording of the album and the experience of working with the producer of the album Steve Albini, whose production on records by the Pixies, the Breeders, and the Jesus Lizard were a famous influence on the band and the record itself. Krist Novoselic recalled In Utero was a testament their late singer Kurt Cobain artistic vision and how he express themselves. Plus, they share some unreleased tracks “Forgotten Tune” on the collection teased at the very end. Listen their 40 minutes discussion below, the audio also available for download:

Dave Grohl talks intimately in 90-minute with Off Camera – Watch

Dave Grohl, a rock musician, a singer-songwriter, a Foo Fighters frontman, a Nirvana drummer, a director, recently get intimately talk in nearly 2 hours of an interview with Off Camera, a talk show with photographer/director Sam Jones.

Off Camera spoke with Grohl at length about his various projects. It’s one of the most intimate interviews he’s granted in ages, touching on Sound City, his eclectic approach to songwriting, his work with supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, the birth of the Foo Fighters and more. Grohl also gave a useful advice to young bands/musician. Hear some quotes of his advice:

Just play live. Honestly, if you’re good at what you do people will recognize that. I really believe it, I really believe that going out playing good songs live as a great live band will make you successful. I really think it will, it doesn’t matter if you’re at the shithole down the street or your on the side stage at Bonaroo or you’re headlining Lollapalooza. If you’re a great band with great songs people will notice it. That’s it, that’s all it is, it’s that simple. Fuck product placement and fuckin labels and A&R people and all that bullshit, it doesn’t fuckin matter, I swear to God, it doesn’t matter. If you back that up with the idea that just playing those great songs in your great live band is enough award for you, then you’re fuckin set. But you’ve got to be bad ass, you’ve just got to be really good. It’s the other things that make up for your musical inability.”

Dave Grohl interview on David Letterman 2/14/2013

Dave Grohl made a visited on the Late Show with David Letterman (following recent appearances on Chelsea Lately and The Colbert Report couple days a week before)  for an interview.

The Foo Fighters frontman and ex-Nirvana drummer talks about his new documentary directed by himself, Sound City. He talked about the origin of the Sound City Studio, how the Fleetwood Mac formed at the studio and his recording experience with Nirvana in 1991 on that studio.

He later with his Sound City Players joined by Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac to performed their collaboration song on that movie, “You Can’t Fix This.”

Dave Grohl hosted Chelsea Lately all week long

Last whole week Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl is hosting Chelsea Handler’s late night show, Chelsea Lately. Probably a publicity move supporting Grohl’s debut documentary Sound City, the singer is filling in while Handler is “out of town”. Grohl’s show is definitely more entertaining.



On Monday night the musician performed a sketch in which Grohl’s blowdryer caused the Superbowl blackout. Then guest rock musician Rick Springfield and Handler’s perpetual minion Chuy performed the song “She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round The Mountain”.

On Wednesday night the show hosted another legend from a very different background, Sir Elton John. The two praised each other gushingly, but they both are pretty awesome. And the final night on Thursday, Jack Black and Kyle Gass band Tenacious D is on, which promises to be pretty funny.

Dave Grohl’ open letter : Regarding Foo Fighters breakup rumors

Hey everyone…

Dave here. Just wanted to write and thank you all again from the bottom of my heart for another incredible year. (Our 18th, to be exact!) We truly never could have done any of this without you…

Never in my wildest dreams did I think Foo Fighters would make it this far. I never thought we COULD make it this far, to be honest. There were times when I didn’t think the band would survive. There were times when I wanted to give up. But… I can’t give up this band. And I never will. Because it’s not just a band to me. It’s my life. It’s my family. It’s my world.

Yes… I was serious. I’m not sure when the Foo Fighters are going to play again. It feels strange to say that, but it’s a good thing for all of us to go away for a while. It’s one of the reasons we’re still here. Make sense? I never want to NOT be in this band. So, sometimes it’s good to just… put it back in the garage for a while…

But, no gold watches or vacations just yet… I’ll be focusing all of my energy on finishing up my Sound City documentary film and album for worldwide release in the very near future. A year in the making, it could be the biggest, most important project I’ve ever worked on. Get ready… it’s coming.

Me, Taylor, Nate, Pat, Chris, and Rami… I’m sure we’ll all see you out there… somewhere…
